The Rural Democrat

Alright Democrats, what's the deal?

Alright, I have been gone for a while. It won't be long before fall arrives & I want to talk about other races that are still up in the air. For Secretary of State we have a new comer Michael Mills, who worked for Lt. Governor Mark Taylor, Gary Horlacher, who was Roy Barnes press secretary, Gail Buckner, who ran for SOS back in 2006, & possibly Darryl Hicks as well.

No one has steeped up to run for Lt. Governor. Forget about Michael Thurnond running for that post. He has his eyes on the governor's seat in 2014, or the U.S. Senate. This guy Carl Camon in my opinion should be persuaded to run for Lt. Governor. He has trave;ed all over the state, mainly in rural georgia.  If not him, then Former State Senator Michael Meyer von Bremen should be considered, or my guy Floyd Griffin, Jr of Milledgeville, who  ran for Lt. Governor back in 1998 & was a former state senator. No one has yet steeped up to run for the U.S. Senate against Johnny Isakson, who people say is popular hiere in Georgia. Still he needs to be challenged for following in lock step with the party of "NO". Thurbert Baker should look at this spot. He maybe the next U.S. Attorney for the North Georgia district. Bit someone will come forward to challenge Isakson, you can bet on that. Still waiting on Terry Coleman to make his announcement that he will seek the Agriculture Commissioner post vacated by Tommy Irvin, who is retiring. He is the only democrat mentioned for the post.  I keep hearing about Rand Knight as a possible candidate. Stay Tuned for that one. My question is: how will this all look by the end of the year? Will anymore democrats step forward to run statewide?

Peanut Politics

Finally, after months and months of searching, another Conservative Democrat from Georgia is blogging!

Keith's site is filled with some interesting stuff, a lot of Middle/South GA news, more local oriented but there is some statewide information.

Keep up the great work Keith!

TN House: Democrats Still Wield Power

While Democrats fared well nationally and made considerable gains in most states during the 2008 election, voters in the state of Tennessee bucked the trend. For the first time in almost four decades, Tennessee Republicans gained control of the Tennessee House of Representatives, with a 50-49 lead. As far back as November 5th, reports suggested that then Republican Minority Leader Jason Mumpower would take over the helm as Speaker when the new Republican led House started their new session.

Well, Representative Mumpower, as well as the entire GOP House Caucus, underestimated the ability of longtime outgoing Speaker Jimmy Naifeah and the rest of the Democratic House Caucus. Yesterday, as nominations were being held, Rep. Mumpower was nominated by one of his GOP colleagues, and then after a brief procedural dispute, Democratic Minority Leader Bob Odom did the unexpected by nominating Republican Kent Williams for Speaker. 49 Democrats voted for Rep. Williams as did Rep. Williams, giving him the Speaker's gavel!

Needless to say the state GOP is throwing a fit, accusing Speaker Williams of breaking a pledge to vote for a Republican.

Actually, Speaker Williams did vote for a Republican, just not the person the party had hyped up for two months.

Needless to say, Democrats in the TN State House have nominated a moderate, someone that sees past party ideology and is willing to put the people of TN first.

Welcome

Welcome to Rural Democrat! I want to thank Jon for the opportunity to move my blog over here as a subsection of Tondee's Tavern. It is an honor to have the ability to post my thoughts and occasional rants on this great site. I believe that I can bring a unique and increasingly rare persepective into the mix here at Tondee's Tavern. Tondee's Tavern has established itself as the go to place for Democratic politics in our great state and it is an honor to be a member of this great team. Now, for those who do not know me, I am a Democrat from rural Middle Georgia. I consider myself to be a member of the the centrist to conservative wing of the Democratic Party. I am a big fan of the Blue Dog Democrats in the United States House of Representatives. My views are generally moderate to conservative with regards to social issues and generally moderate on fiscal issues.

Within this blog, I hope to focus mainly on Georgia politics with a little bit of Congressional politics, as well as political news from other states mixed in.

If you have any questions, comments, or even some news, feel free to post a message in the comments area, or send me an email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
