The first domino?

Rather quickly, the Democratic field for Secretary of State appears to be getting crowded ... though it might offer a glimpse of some things to come.

Today, Gary Horlacher, a longtime player in Democratic players, just announced his candidacy, while Gail Buckner quietly jumped into the race within the past two weeks. In addition, Darryl Hicks is seeking the seat as well. This comes just as there is increased chatter that Vernon Jones might seek the nomination as well.

Buckner ran for the seat in 2006 and lost to Karen Handel, but her entry into the race isn't that shocking. Horlacher, who worked as press secretary for Roy Barnes during his campaign for governor in 1998, is rather interesting. Given that, for the past few months, we've heard all sorts of rumors that Barnes was working to assemble a slate of candidates to run on a unified platform, having someone with close ties to him seeking another statewide office adds more intrigue to the mix.

Barnes, based on what I've heard from multiple sources, is planning on jumping into the race ... and, from those same sources, his entry would presumably force out at least one, if not two, of the three declared candidates for governor on the Democratic side.

Where are you getting this about Gail Buckner? Just curious because I have heard and seen nothing to indicate she is running. A quick Google search yielded no website, which is not a big deal right now, but importantly it yielded no announcement or indication that she is running.

Just curious because if she's been running for two weeks, where's the announcement?

Yeah, that link would be viable if we were in 2006...

The headline clearly states "FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – April 20, 2006 "

Buckner is running. I think she made a statement a few weeks ago. I just gotta find it. She also called the Gwinnett party today to see if she could speak at our Herb Green event next weekend.

sndeak,

That's cool, I'm not questioning y'alls credibility by any means, it's just odd that she's made such a quiet splash. Most candidates do not have a website up (or if they do it's not active, yet), however, if she's been in the race for a few weeks I'm shocked that we have not seen any statements on the blogs, AJC, or some other media.

I have added her to the SOS list though.

Thanks!

I think all this bluster about Roy Barnes is a lot of hot air. Georgia Governor's once they are out, typically are not successful at comebacks. Ask Carl Sanders and Lester Maddox. You may remember George Busbee mulled a race in 1990, only to find there was no room for him, and he dropped out before filing. The candidate to watch this year is David Poythress. Poythress has retooled and restyled his campaign and message. He is raising the money and has the message thats resonating. I think Poythress is another Joe Frank Harris and he is going to be the candidate to beat when its all said and done.

RD...I know what you mean. I don't consider her a serious candidate this time around. As far as I am concerned, I think she lucked out last time. Holcomb or Reddy would have been much, much better general election candidates and I think people will go with Darrell Hicks this time around.

JF...Don't underestimate Roy in the primary. I happen to agree with you about Poythress in the general. His prioblem is getting through the primary.

In 2006, I voted for Holcomb in the first round, and Buckner in the runoff. Hicks' Democratic credentials didn't seem that strong at the time. At the same time, Buckner's GE campaign seemed really weak to me; she did not seem to project a great deal of warmth or confidence whenever I saw her in person. I have no idea for whom I'll end up voting for either SOS or Governor for that matter. Rob Teilhet for AG - now that's an easy choice!

MariettaDemocrat,

"Hicks' Democratic credentials didn't seem that strong at the time"

What do you mean by this? If you're talking about his role in a county party or something I don't know how active he's been within the party, but if you mean whether or not he was a Democrat or Republican, his family has strong ties to the Democratic Party.
